40 cubic yard skip hire

When you’re working on a commercial construction project, you’re going to need a skip that can handle the load. Enter J Dickinson & Sons. Our big commercial skips are equipped to handle the refuse you’ll generate in a large-scale building project, from standard “builder’s skips” all the way up to our massive 40-yard skip – and we can offer lockable skips too.

To hire a skip, simply use this page to choose your skip and get in touch.

40 cubic yard skip size

The skips we offer range in size from 2 cubic yard options for small projects, all the way up to large 40-yard roll on roll offs. For reference, a standard “builder’s skip” – used for large building projects or small commercial construction – is 7 or 8 cubic yards.

For domestic projects, we recommend skips ranging from 2 cubic yards, for a small amount of construction waste (it’s about waist height), to 8 cubic yard skips for bigger projects.

For commercial use, meanwhile, our options range from 12 cubic yards to our biggest 40 cubic yard skip – a vast, 20ft length skip for very large amounts of waste.

If you’re unsure what size skip is best for your project, take a look at our options, or get in touch and we’ll help guide you.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 40 yard skip’s weight capacity?

A 40 yard skip will hold up to 15 tonnes. Exceeding this weight can be dangerous and even prevent transportation.

How much can you get inside a 40 yard skip?

A 40 yard skip is commonly used for large sized commercial projects. It’s the biggest skip we provide.

To give you some idea of what you can fit inside a 40 yard skip, we estimate you can fit approximately 440 full black bin bags.

Can you put too much inside a 40 yard skip?

Yes you can. There are clear fill-lines that indicate how much you can put in your skip. Overloading a skip can be dangerous, particularly for transportation purposes. In some cases, if you overload a skip it can even be impossible to transport it at all.

How long can you hire a 40 yard skip for?

We typically lease a skip for up to 14 days. If you need to hire a skip for longer, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we’ll see what we can arrange for you.

What can I not put in a 40 yard skip?

There are some items that can’t be put in a skip: usually because the materials are hazardous or harmful, so will need to be disposed of in another way. This includes, but not limited to, the following:

  • Electrical equipment
  • Asbestos
  • Gas cylinders
  • Batteries
  • Solvents
  • Fuel
  • Paint
  • Medical waste
  • Plasterboards
  • Mattress
  • Glass

If you have any questions about the type of waste you wish to dispose, you can contact us here.

Do skip hire companies recycle?

We can’t speak for every skip hire company, but we’re dedicated to helping both our customers and environment become a healthier and greener place to live.

When you book a skip with us, we’ll recycle as much of its contents as possible. We have a 17-acre on-site facility to help separate and recycle materials, so whenever we collect a skip or waste from a customer, it’s processed through our innovative picking facility to separate recyclable materials.
