How garden waste skip hire works
Hiring a garden waste skip is simple and saves you time and effort. Here’s how the process works:
Book your skip
Enter your postcode and waste type for a choice of skip sizes. Then just let us know when you want your skip delivered and collected for your final quote.
Delivery to your home
We’ll deliver your garden waste skip to your address. If it needs to go on a public road, we’ll organise a council permit as part of your booking.
Collection and disposal
Once your hire period is done (usually around 14 days), we’ll collect your skip and take your garden waste away for composting or recycling.
Why choose skips for garden waste removal?
There are several reasons to hire a skip for your garden waste, including:
- More convenient: Just throw your garden waste straight in as you work. No need for repeated trips to the tip or waiting around for council collections.
- Handles bulky waste: From old decking and fence panels to broken garden furniture, a skip handles even the most awkward garden waste.
- Flexible sizes: Whether it’s a small garden tidy-up or a full landscaping overhaul, our garden waste skips come in a range of sizes to suit you.
- Environmentally responsible: Licensed skip providers make sure garden waste is disposed of in line with green regulations.
How much does garden clearance cost?
The cost of hiring a garden waste skip depends on a few key factors: the size of the skip you choose, how long you need it for, and the type of waste being cleared. At J Dickinson & Sons, we offer a range of skips ideal for garden projects. Skip hire prices start from £180 for a 2-yard skip, rising to around £300 for an 8-yard skip.

How is garden waste recycled?
Garden waste is usually collected, shredded, and turned into compost or soil improver. Green waste, such as grass cuttings, leaves, and branches, is broken down at composting facilities, where it decomposes into nutrient-rich material that can be reused in agriculture, landscaping, or gardening. Soil from skips is screened and graded so it can be repurposed for topsoil and construction projects.
Can you burn garden waste?
Yes, you can burn garden waste in the UK, but there are rules. Small amounts of dry garden waste, such as branches and leaves, can be burned on a bonfire, but you must not cause smoke that affects neighbours or traffic. Burning garden waste that contains plastics, treated wood, or household rubbish is illegal. For a cleaner and safer option, garden waste should be recycled or disposed of using a garden waste skip or taken to your local tip.
What can I put in my garden waste bin?
Most council garden waste bins accept:
- Grass cuttings
- Leaves and hedge trimmings
- Plants, flowers, and weeds
- Small branches and twigs
You cannot put soil, rubble, large branches, or plastic bags in a garden waste bin. For bigger loads like soil, fencing, or bulky green waste, hiring a garden waste skip is often the best alternative.
Can you put garden waste in a skip?
Yes, garden waste can go in a skip. Items like grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, branches, soil, and old garden furniture are all suitable for skip hire. Most providers recycle green waste into compost and reuse soil through screening. However, hazardous items such as herbicides, paints, solvents, or electrical garden equipment cannot be placed in a skip.
